Mikey and Giselle were two dogs I did a transport for. When we adopted blossom we could no longer foster as she loved her borthers but was not keen on lettign other dogs into her house. I continued to help with rescue and one of the things I do is transports picking up dogs that were are owner surrenders or strays and taking them to their foster homes. Mikey and Giselle were my first transports. I know the jounaling is a bit rough but I guess it still upsets me that these poor dogs were in such bad condition and the previous owners tried to play themselves off as victims. I used the background paper I chose as a not to the Dutch origins of the Keeshond breed. I printed the jounaling and photos on transperency film and attached to the layout.

I will never forget Mikey and Giselle although they were not my fosters, I did their transport, the reason for their surrender to rescue was that they husband of the family that owned them had lost his job and they could no longer afford them or so we were told. What the true story was I do now know. I volunteered to go and pick them up and bring them to Lysa Bea's (our presidents) house. I forgot Mikey's original name but Giselle was named Critter (how awful). They had been purchased from a breeder and were from the same litter. They were 8 or 9. We would come to find out later that they were not the beloved pets the owners said they were and had not received the care they should have. It was definitely a lesson in human duplicity and how people can lie and change the narrative to justify their bad behavior. It was weird the wife had this sob story of how sad she was to give them up and had a scrapbook of them when they were young. The wife seemed to be truly sorrowful although the husband seemed insincere no in retrospect, I actually felt bad for them in a way until the vet check. I should have suspected something when I got there and the husband was not there yet because he was playing golf as the wife said. He made a point of telling me that he was actually helping out at the course to make money since he lost his job but the wife slipped up and revealed the lie before he got there.
We knew Mikey had hair loss and were told that it was due to a medical condition, Giselle looked healthy if anything she had a very heavy coat, it was impacted from lack of grooming/brushing out her undercoat. Upon examination by a vet after being brought into rescue it was apparent that Mikey's alopecia was due to flea allergies. Giselle needed to be shaved as she has large sores underneath all that hair. Their overall condition was pretty poor and they both showed signs of neglect. It was the opinion of the vet that the dogs had lived outside most of their lives and had chronic flea issues that were only treated at the time they were given up. I guess their previous owner did that for them but I am sure it was for appearance's sake. The previous owners painted a nice picture of being loving dog owners, but the dogs condition spoke volumes.
Mikey never did grow his hair back and his new owner bought coats for him to wear to keep him warm. With love, good food and regular vet care they both blossomed. They were adopted by a lovely Woman, Nancy that had adopted form Turbokees before and who had recently lost her girl Gypsy. I actually immediately thought of Nancy when I was driving them to Lysas. They seemed like such sweet calm dogs and I knew she would give them a great home. They were perfect for each other. I was so happy when she adopted them.
Mikey was such a character he had so much personality and loved to talk. Giselle was a quiet lady and content to let Mikey take center stage. She was very sweet as well. Sadly, their time with Nancy was short they both only lived 3 or 4 years afterwards. She took wonderful care of them but she could not undo years of neglect. She did give them the best years of their lives though and they knew she loved them. In the end that is what matters.
I do not have pictures of them when I picked them up as I forgot my camera and did not have one on my cell at the time. These pictures are from the picnic and at a fundraiser that we did for the rescue with pictures with the Easter bunny.
