Journaling challenge. It says:
I love the internet. Most people would say that I love computers, but just having a computer would never be enough for me. Without the internet, I am lost. I use the internet for every aspect of my life. I am on it a lot at work. I am on it almost constantly at home. I use it for research, reading email, banking, bills, business, creativity, inspiration, communication, games, friendships, and fun. A few times over the past years our internet has gone down or been shut off. I thought I was going to wither away and die. I didn’t know what to do with myself without it. I know it seems ridiculous to be so helpless without such a material object, but it is such a big part of my life and I honestly don’t know how anyone lives without it.
I have been on computers my entire life, but I was first introduced to the internet when I was 14 by my friend, Nate Johnson. At that time (1993) the internet wasn’t as popular and widespread as it is today. I remember the day my dad bought our first modem. I had heard Nate tell me stories of BBS’s (Bulletin Board Systems) where you could go online and talk to other people in real life, through your computer. This was an amazing concept to me! Seems kind of silly now since the telephone gives you the same effect of talking to someone without being in the same room or even country as them, but to do it through your computer was like “Wow!” I was so excited as my Dad and I brought it home from the computer store and hooked it up. He let me try it out and when I heard my first “kkkkkrrrrrrrrssssssshhhhhhhhhmmmmmm ppppppppppphhhhhhhhhhuuuuuuggggggghhhhhhgggggggrrrrrrrrkkkkkk ding duh ding” it was so exciting!
The next day we woke up to snow so that meant no school! I was so happy because I’d get to stay home and play on the BBS all day! I felt so cool leaving messages and the boards and trying out the chat rooms! I met all kinds of new friends (mostly boys) and even eventually met some of them in real life and dated them! Before long I was spending way too much time on the BBS’s and Nate started to regret introducing me to the Net. I didn’t care though; I was thrilled as I learned about each new thing I could do on the internet as by then I had discovered the magic of AOL (America OnLine)! Oh the doors that AOL opened up for me! Now not only could I use the internet to talk to other people, but I learned how to use it to do my homework, research for reports and essays, search for phone numbers and addresses, and much more.
Over the 4 years of high school I made many boyfriends and deep friendships with girls too. We helped each other by encouraging each other when we had bad days and cheered each other on in the good days. I had a life in the real world too, but most times, I preferred the online world. It was where I could be the real me without the worries of physical flaws getting in the way, or the wannabe me masking my true feelings. Behind the monitor, I was in complete control which is something a teenager doesn’t get to feel very often and let me tell you, it felt great!
