This is a porcupine that we watched for three days as went went to our mailbox and back. He was always heading from someplace to a little draw full of trees. Never were sure just where he had been on his travels. The day I got his picture, I braved 6 inches of snow in an alfalfa field in my truck to get as close as I could get to him with out getting stuck. I didn't get stuck but darn, that porky led me on a tough chase. The snow came up over my knees as I got closer to him and the fence. I decided not to climb thru the fence so ending up trying to shoot a moving target with my zoom. He was really interesting to watch as he moved thru the snow with a sort of paddling motion. You can see he has cockleburrs stuck to the quills on his side and also his long claws. Porupines are interesting but not some of our favorite kinds of wildlife. We hate it when our dogs, horses or cattle end up with quills in them. In addition to that, we live where trees are at a premium and the darn things eat tree bark which kills the trees.
