This is a page that I have wanted to do for a very long time. I found a letter and a hand drawn sketch at my Gran's house on the day of her funeral. The letter was addressed to my Grandad. The sketch was of him. I needed to do some research so I could tell the whole story, my father could fill in some gaps, but I had to go to the internet to find out information about the sender and artist.I based my page on a sketch posted on the Sarah's Cards Ltd blog, but I needed more space for journalling, so I made a hidden flap so I could put the whole story down. The inside journalling reads -“My Grandad, Bob Kirk, was a Trade Unionist. He was part of the AEU, representing engineers at Qualcast, British Rail and Rolls Royce in Derby. In 1959, he was part of the General Election campaign of Arthur Joseph Champion, the Labour Party MP for South East Derbyshire. Arthur Champion was first elected as an MP in 1945, defeating the Conservative MP Paul Emrys-Evans by over 23,000 votes. He held a seat in Parliament until the election in 1959, where he lost the seat by just 12 votes - ‘that fatal twelve’. After the election he sent a letter and a pencil sketch he did at the ballot count to my Grandad. Arthur Champion was made a life peer in 1962, taking the title Baron Champion of Pontypridd. He served twice in positions in Government. He died in 1985, aged 87, just 14 motnhs after Grandad. My Grandad was a quiet man, I had no idea of his dabblings in politics. He was a Union man through and through, with strong political views that he didn't push onto others, but ones that he was passionate about nonetheless”tfl
