First I matted the picture. I then placed the picture where I wanted it on the patterned paper and put a light pencil mark where I wanted to begin cutting with the exacto knife, and another light pencel mark where I wanted to end. Then I removed the matted picture and cut around what I wanted to overlap the picture. I applied glue to the back side of the matting, and carefully slipped the matted picture in place under the hat and umbrella, etc. You can have overlapping, as much of the pattern as you wish. You may have to bend the paper somewhat (especially so if you want to do both the top and bottom with overlaps) in order to slip the matted picture under whatever you cut through, but be careful not to crease it, or tear it.
