a picture of my dad when he was a young man
Journaling: this is my dad, Meliton Henry Betancourt. He's probably in his mid 20's in this picture, but that's all i know. i came across this picture after his death, so the who, where, and what are unanswerable. mom doesn't know the details either. but, look at how handsome he is. that half-smile and jaunty tile of his hat are killer. i often ask myself-what did he know at this point? did he think he would be a man well-like and respected in his community? that he would be so involed in his church that the keys were entrusted to him? did he think he would father twelve children? that those twelve children would succeed and prosper under his demanding tutelage? that he would one day have 27 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren? or that his youngest daughter, in spite of herself, would be missing him so much? no, i don't imagine such thoughts were going through his mind at all at this point in his life. i look at this picture and with hindsight remark- "oh, dad, you have such a long, hard, wonderful life in front of you. enjoy more, worry less, and don't stop at child #8." love you.
