My almost teen daughter is going through awful teen issues..feeling targeted, confused, left out etc. This Christmas she got so frustrated that she just put her head dwon on the fence to cry..I tried to explain to her that things can be interpreted in many ways, life is not so clean cut. That's where the title, life's many shades of gray comes from.
Journaling reads:Megan, I see this candid photo of you and my heart bleeds a bit. Life and the choices it presents are not always clean cut and easy. It can be frustrating and confusing. Sometimes it is so hard to be the eldest child. Remember, that I am an eldest child too. We seem to take the world on, and when we fall, we fall especially hard. When you feel left out and that the world is against you, I want you to read these next words. I don’t know who wrote them, but I do believe what is said. They will remind you of what is really important in life.
"I've learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way they handle these 3 things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights. I've learned that making a "living" is not the same thing as "making a life.” I've learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance. I’ve learned that regardless of your relationship with your parents, you'll miss them when they're gone from your life. I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw something back. I've learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision. I've learned that even when I have pains, I don't have to be one. I've learned that every day you should reach out and touch someone. People love a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back. I've learned that I still have a lot to learn. I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."
There are many shades of gray in life, Megan. Don’t let them confuse you as you try to distinguish between them. Remember who you are inside. Pick your battles and focus on the really important things.
