Very Laid Back Challenges: Polka Dots & Bling. (You can call them circles. I call them really big pokeydots.) ;)

For my BOM about the only pet we've had in nearly 25 years of marriage.

Have I mentioned how much I love the ease of getting black cat embellies at this time of year? ;-)

Journaling (and there's a lot of it):

Irena came to live with us around Easter 2000.

The guy I worked for owned several rental properties. Master keys were kept at our office, where the exterminator would come to get them when he needed to spray for bugs each month. This particular time, he came back saying one of the houses had a pup & a cat who had been abandoned.

I called Jim to see if I could bring the cat home and have three days to find someone to take her. I don't know why, but he agreed.

Jim & I hadn't had pets throughout our 17 years of marriage (other than fish). We blamed it on his allergies, but that was just an easy way to avoid the indoor/outdoor debate.

The cat settled that question herself. The first evening, she came in for "a visit." (She was staying in the garage.) The second night, she came in to stay. By the third day, Jim was calling to find out prices to have her declawed.

The vet estimated her to be 12-18 months old then, so she is 8 or 8 1/2 years old now.

She's docile, which fits well with our family. She has moved with us once and tolerated a new baby in the house. She is my constant companion, seldom letting me out of her sight if I'm home.

As soon as Jim saw the cat, he decided she looked like the black panther alter-ego of "Irena" from "The Cat People" and should be named Irena.

Kim was reading "Black Beauty" in school at the time & thought her name should be Beauty.

Thus the name, Irena Beauty. (More commonly known as "Cat.")
