So...I went out to my garden and dug up a fire ant nest to take this photo. I was snapping away, being EVER so careful not to touch them, when a gust of wind comes up and blows a whole mess of them onto me! It's OK - you can laugh... in hindsight it was kinda funny (aren't crazy people funny?) Those of you who don't know about fire ants - be very, very glad of that ignorance! Fire ants were imported to South America from Africa and have migrated North - many of the Southern states are infested with them now (and Southwestern, too, I think.) They are tiny little red or black ants with a MIGHTY BIG sting. They leave itchy, painful welts on your skin that can last for several days...kinda like a mosquito on steriods. Don't know what possessed me to do this - brilliant, I know - and I have the stings to prove it.
