All my life I had heard that my grandfather had decended from Indians on his mothers side. Well there had to be some truth to this and any
one who ever looked at my grandfather could see. Not only did he have Indian features but he in the summer time would turn very very dark and
it was not dark brown but dark red. His father was Irish and his it was said was of Indian decent. His name was Hunigan and his mothers
was Mary Criner. Well after years of reasearch we found that Marys grandmother who would be my great great great grandmother was Indian
her name was Mary Manuel. Mary was the daughter of John Manuel and Lovice Holder both were born in 1780. John in N.c and Lovice in
Virginia. Lovice as from German parantage so, John was the Indian. There are so many tales and traditions in our family about the Indian
but I really think there must be 2 indians in this family. One tradition was that our Indian was Cherokee which is what most in our area were but one tration said
our Indian came from out west and was Nahavaho. But after years of research I have come to the conclusion that this branch of our Indian
heritage came from The Croatans who were on the outter banks of the North Carolina and whose name was written on the tree when the first
settlers were lost at the Roanoke in 1580. There is much written documentation to support this. The Manuels seem to have been Mulengeons
or portugese who married into the Indians. John it
was said was found wondering in the woods as a very small child by a settler named Manuel who took him in and raised him, and John took the Manuel name. I have no picture of Mary Manuel or John but this picture was sent to me by a dear lady on the
internet of her Ancestor who was Marys sister Labenon. She said this
picture was an old tin type taken in 1838 but I believe it to be a dugerrotype as the tin were not made until 1850's and the dugerrotype
were made of copper and silver. This picture was almost not to be distinguished until I ran it through my photo editor and this was
the best it could come out. One interesting thing about this photo is the fact that it states she is wearing her Sqush Blossom necklace which is a symbol of her tribe. I researched Indian jewerly and that is a
symbol from the Navaho so that goes back to the other tradition. So I guess there will always be a mystery here...there is no evidence to
support that John Manuel and his family were ever out west in Navaho country but that necklace which i cropped and put in the lowere partof this page will always leave a nagging doubt..So the line to this
Indian is as follows ..
My Grandfather on dads side
William Hunigan b. 1889
Mary Criner b. 1862
Elizabeth Burton b. 1834
Mary manuel b. around 1818
John Manuel b. around 1780 Portugese and Indian descent (mulengeon)
this goes back pretty far and still not to the Indian but I believe
there was another Indian this on On Grandfathers Fathers side I believe
His father Olivers Mother Mary Bobbett was decent of Indian also but
a lot of research must be done in both areas
A member of our family said if anyone can find the Indian it would be Carol, well maybe someday the
peaces will fall together and I won't disappoint the members who expect it !!
