It is disgraceful that these animals can be buried alive to create urban areas. I am glad they are having to relocate them, the Dyson factory in our home town had to spend loads of money on relocating newts and badgershad to spend
The contractors make so much money I have no sympathy. I love Florida and its wildlife. And everyone seems to want to move here to enjoy it as well but in doing so they destroy it. And some of the contractors do the most unscrupulous backscratching to get permits pushed. Not to mention the blatant disreguard of protections. There is no real enforcement.
I love these guys. I live in Pasco county and when we built our house, we had to move the house over 10 feet to avoid a burrow. They are in my yard all of the time as I live on a preserve!! Great photo!!
I was excited to see this gopher tortoise outside the library this morning. These turtles are listed as a threatened species in our county do to so much development in our area. The tortoises get buried alive in their burrows each time a new housing area or shopping center is built. From Florida Today' newspaper this week: Brevard County on Friday wrapped up one of its largest efforts to relocate gopher tortoises, a job required because state regulations no longer allow builders to bury them alive in exchange for preserving habitat somewhere else. Including surveys that found almost 200 burrows on the 136-acre park site and a permit to move up to 100 tortoises to Pasco County, the work could cost up to $162,000.
