I have had many kinds of mailboxes in my life. Some at the end of a long long driveway, some at the Post Office, some along the road with dried grasses by the post and grasshoppers to greet me when I paused, one was a slot in my front door, and now this. As a child they were magic to me. "Wish Books" came and I spent hours choosing toys and school clothes, letters came that made my mother laugh or cry, bills came that made my father quiet. Once in a while on a magic day a box would arrive. Everyone wanted to be the one to open it and release the gift of joy it surely brought. I remember wishing someone, anyone, would send ME something. Now I sit here and whisk letters off around the world in seconds. It is wonderful to talk to so many so easily yet I miss Dec 1 when Grandma Spear's Christmas letter came all in ONE long sentence, painfully written in English, sharing her life for another year. I miss the ink and link with someone's hand.
