This set of two 12x12’s will be framed and presented as a going away gift for my good friend, Sam. Sam’s dad has been our roommate for 2 years, and we’ve all become very close – but now we’re moving out of state, and it’s uncertain how often we’ll be able to see each other.
I wanted to give him something that will help him to remember us, but at the same time ~ something fun & cool to look at; so it wouldn’t be stored away in a box. So, I came up with this; my Ode to Sam! Framed artwork dedicated to one of the coolest, bravest, most outstanding kids in the world… (you see, I’m framing them so that he’ll be constantly reminded of these things). Here’s the journaling; I really started to tear up when I was writing it!
[i]My little buddy Sam ~ you crazy little man ~ this gift is to remind you of the strength in your hands. You’ve got the power to change the world, the wisdom to do much good; your heart holds the compassion that ALL of us should. As you grow up, many things will change; but never lose sight of this fact that remains: there is NOTHING you cannot do, NO obstacle you can’t overcome... and as long as your heart loves, your work is never done.[/i]
The Japanese Kanji translates into: [b]Unusually Strong Youth[/b]

[b][u]TECHNIQUES / MISC.[/u][/b]
Each photo was optimized in PS before printing. I added the rounded words above Sam's head(s) on my PC.
The journaling was printed on transparency film and laid over the SW paper. "An absolute JOY to be around" was also printed from my PC, then embellished w/ a bottle cap and various ribbon.
The footer, where it reads SAM, was also printed on photo paper and trimmed to lay over the SW paper. "There's no denying it - you're awesome" was printed on transparency film. Everything else was hand-rubbed, hand-stamped & glued into place :)
I'm a graphic designer and web developer - it's really hard for me not to incorporate some printed digital elements ~ it comes so naturally!
