The tablet represents
a book of law. The
tablet in her left
hand reads “July 4th,
1776” (in Roman Numerals).
Full scale replicas in the museum give us an up close look at the Statue’s copper face and foot. Due to the natural oxidation of copper and the harbor’s salty air the statue has developed the green patina you see today.
The Statue of Liberty was received as a gift from France in recognition of the friendship established during the American Revolution.
The 7 rays of the crown represent the 7 seas and continents of the world. While the 25 windows in the crown symbolize gemstones found on the earth and the heaven’s rays shining over the world.
The torch represents a symbol of enlightenment. The original 1886 torch, along with the much altered flame, now resides in the lobby. The new torch is made of copper, and is covered in 24K gold leaf. The sunlight reflects off the gold during the daytime and 16 floodlights light the torch at night. Access to the torch has been closed since 1916.
