A symbolic feature that people cannot see is the broken chain wrapped around the Statue's feet. Protruding from the bottom of her robe, the broken chains symbolize her free forward movement, enlightening the world with her torch free from oppression and servitude.
Since 9/11 the interior of the statue remains closed, although a glass ceiling in the pedestal allows visitors to view the statue’s framework and the circular stairwell to the crown.
We will not forget that Liberty has here made her home; nor shall her chosen altar be neglected.
