First - this is my hand.

Second - the opal ring on my finger was given to me this year on my 50th birthday by my DD, Jen.

The Story - One day, while Jen and I were at Zales jewelry store, picking up some rings she had sent out to be fixed, I was browsing the showcases and spotted this lovely opal ring. Now, I am not a big jewelry fan - only things I wear, really, are my wedding rings - but I used to have a couple opal rings years ago that I really liked and both had disappeared over the years. Anyway, I spotted this ring and instantly knew I would enjoy wearing it on my right hand. I pulled Jen over to the showcase and said, "Here - if Papa (DH) asks what I want for Christmas this year, tell him about this ring!" Now, DH isn't usually big on gifts - giving or receiving - but sometimes he surprises me (like when he bought me a laptop) and, other than the wedding rings, he's never bought me jewelry. Therefore, I didn't really expect to receive this ring, but still, I hoped. Jen said she would try to remember to suggest it, should the topic come up. Well, that was that and I put the idea in the back of my mind.

Imagine my total surprise a week or so later when, while out to a joint birthday lunch with Jen and DS #3's girlfriend, Kasey - who's b.day was a few days after mine - Jen hands me a gift bag with a new hoodie jacket we'd picked out together whle shopping at Old Navy. I pulled out the jacket (which I knew she was giving me), then noticed something else in the bottom of the bag. I pulled out a small, unwrapped box and opened it. It was empty. Thinking Jen had dropped it into the bag by mistake, I handed it to her and said, "Okaaaay...I think you dropped something!"

A few minutes went by and we looked through the menus. While reading mine, I had it standing up on the table and felt a bump against the back of it. I lifted the menu and saw this gorgeous ring!! Jen had completely surprised me with this lovely gift and I was floored :) Too stunned to say much (which is rare!), I managed to get out a few words, like,"Jennifer Rose!" and "I can't believe you got this!" and, of course, "Thank you sooo much, Sweetie!"

Sorry so long, but you *did* say you wanted to hear the story behind the gift, so...
