Journaling reads:Daddy
He was the strongest man I will ever know! He could always answer my questions or find the answer for me. He was fair and equitable and most of all very loving of his only child, a girl!
When I was five I knew that I loved horses. Horses are the most beautiful animals. Look into their eyes and their spirit shines. I asked my Daddy when I was five if we could have a horse. He was in the Navy and obviously owning large animals would not be a good thing then. He sagely explained to me that horses had to have plenty of land to roam free and that when we had some land for a horse that we would get a horse.
It was a simple answer and made sense to me. I looked longingly at every horse picture I could find and began drawing horses. I was content with that solution until........ I was eleven.
Daddy bought a house that had a few acres of land. I had him then! “Daddy, I said, can we have a horse now?” “Of course,” he said.
Just one little hitch, we didn’t have a barn for the horse. What would we do? My answer at the ripe old age of eleven was, we can build one, can’t we? Little did I know what I was in far and what I would learn from this experience.
We built that barn, my Daddy and I! Just the two of us. I began to learn about who he really was. The smartest man I would ever know. By the end of the summer we had a barn and I had the meanest calluses on my hands that you have ever seen. The finest day was when we went and got my horse, the most beautiful stead ever seen , at least to me.
Daddy and I enjoyed learning about horses and their care. He learned how to be the farrier, the veterinarian, the teacher, the trainer and ultimately one of the best American Quarter Horse Association judges in the United States. I’d say we traveled far together in those wonderful years, but then all my years with my Daddy were wonderful. The lessons I learned about hard work and play have stayed with me all my life and I know how to build a barn!
