Beautiful! What a sad and tragic story. I love how you incorporated the old newspaper article, that was brilliant. Wonderful job! I also like the color flowers on the photo.
Carol, this is wonderful! It's so interesting in content (I'm just starting to wander into the geneology arena. . . fascinating stuff! . . . ) and I love how you pinned the corsage to her coat. GREAT job!
This is gorgeous! You are so blessed to have these photos and to find the newspaper clipping is terrific. I always enjoy reading your stories so much. They are always so interesting.
I was so interested in reading what you had written when I saw you lo featured tonight. Amazing when I started reading that you mentioned Floyd County. My dad is from Galax. Your grandparents may have known my grandparents. I am so sorry to learn of how your grandma pased. I can't stand drunk drivers. They take too many lives. Have you checked with Library of VA about the Band of American Daughters? Your lo is a great addition to your Genealogy, Deborah
I'M SO SORRY FOR HOW YOU GRANNY WAS TAKEN AWAY.THANK GOD SOME OF THE LAWS HAVE CHANGED SINCE THEN.BUT NOT ALL ,SOMETIMES MONEY STILL RULES AND IT'S SAD.GREAT LO
A wonderful page you wrote for Mary Sue, she was certainly a beautiful women. Its all most earry those who are still here that look so much like her. Wonderful page and LO.
My Great Grandmother was born in 1862 in Montgomery County Virginia. and Died in 1926 in Sullivan Co Tn. She was possibly the first person in Tn to be killed by a drunk driver. I grew up hearing the stories of her and when i began genealogy one of the first things my cousin Becky and I did was go find this in old newspaper on microfilm. Mary was the daughter of William Giles Criner and Elizabeth Burton Criner. She live most of her early years in Floyd Co Virginia . She is named for her 2 grandmothers Susanna Harless and Mary Manuel. Mary ( her grandmother) was full blood Croatan Indian.. When she was 16 she went to work for my great grandfather in his store in Floyd Co Va. He had been through the Civil war and was 18 yrs older than her. when she was 18 he married her. They lived for a few yrs there and then for unknown reasons up and moved to Tn. It was said that Mary Sue was a wonderfully sweet lady who was always the first in the community to help out if someone was sick or hurt. She was a Church going Christian. After my great grandfather in 1922 she lived alone until 1926 when she was killed crossing the road in front of her home by a drunk driver. He was rich mans son and was never convicted. I think one of the things that I really was surprised about was that when I found this clipping. The paper in 1926 only at 3 columns and this was the headlines. Today so many people are killed by drunk drivers it would probably gotten a small paragraph on page 10. The obituary said she was a member of the Band of American Daughters I have tried for 27 yrs to find out just what that organization is and can find nothing on it it must by now be defunct but I think it must have something to do with her Indian Heritage
