I've had these pics in a regular photo album FOREVER and waited to scrapbook them until I could tell the story of a special woman "properly". Finally, they have earned the place in our scrapbook that they deserve!

There's lots of hidden journaling here at the bottom of the right side layout (along with some hidden pictures) and on a pull-out booklet behind the pic of my dh and his Grossmami.

It all reads:
I am so grateful we lived in Germany during the late 1990’s, because it gave us the opportunity get to know and love our dear Grossmami. We were able to visit her frequently in the last years of her life. I know she loved having us nearby. It was obvious she loved her precious oldest grandson, Robert, and relished the time she was with him and her first great-grandson, Andrew.

I remember Grossmami was an impeccable hostess, an extraordinary cook, and a delightful woman to spend time with. Though she spoke little English, and I spoke even less Swiss German, we were able to communicate rather nicely. She always encouraged me to learn Swiss German because it was after all, my husband’s heritage. Though she was certainly a very formal grandmother, I always felt peacefully welcomed into her home.

Grossmami’s apartment was filled with textural delights – exquisitely embroidered fabrics, handcarved antiques, weathered pewters, luxurious rugs in various sizes, shapes, and patterns atop polished marble floors. You could read the Tobler family heritage from the rich furnishings, and collection of photographs of family members – past, present, and around the world!

And then you could read some more . . . in every room!

Her home was indeed a booklover’s paradise – shelves and shelves of diverse reading materials – in a plethora of languages and genres. There were glamour magazines, children’s fairytales, travel guides, classical novels, mysteries, Bibles . . . whatever your heart desired.

And if there was possibly not enough to feast your eyes upon or keep you occupied within the home, a quick glance to the living room window could leave you speechless with sweeping views of the Teufen valley and the breathtaking Säntis in the distance.

We will always cherish the moments we shared with Grossmami.

This would be our final Christmas spent with Grossmami – the last time we were to see her. It was the only time the four generations of Toblers – Grossmami, Papi, Robert, and Andrew – were all together at one time. Here, we made the announcement that Andrew would be a big brother soon. Our lives were to continue with the growth of our family, and our eventual move back to the United States later that year. Grossmami would leave this world April 29, 1999, at the tender age of 89.
