Journalling: In December 1986, Jim Smith, aged 60 and his wife Frances, drove to Gardner Olds/Cadillac in Manahawken, NJ to purchase a new car. It was Frances' birthday. THey picked out an Oldsmobile, which had always been Jim's preference in automobiles. While the dealership was getting the car and paperwokr ready, Jim and Frances went to lunch. When they came back, frances noticed and admired a 1987 Cadillac Coupe Deville on the showroom floor. Jim asked her if she would rather have that car instead. She said it was just beautiful. So they changed their plans and drove home with that instead.
Bob met Jim in 1972 when Jim came to work for him in the Camera Department of Summit Gift Gallery. At that time they started to call each other "Raou" (private joke) Over time, with job transfers and relocations, the 2 lost touch. Then, one day in 2000, Bob googled Jim's name. He found an entry that sounded like his old friend, called up and said "I'm going to say one word and you'll know who this is" Jim was willing to play along. Bob said "Raou?". Jim sad "Raou!!!" They'd found each other after all that time. Jim was now 95 years old and frances had passed away. They renewed their friendship over the next few years, as Bob would visit to play cards and help with little chores around the house. Even after Bob moved to NH, he would continue to call twice a week and whenever we go to NJ we always stop to visit. We were able to attend Jims 100th Birthday in February 2006
In the spring of 2007, Jim, who was still able to pass his driver's test, had a minor accident while backing out of his garage. He decided to turn in his driver's license at this time. He called Bob, who had been an avid car collector before moving to NH and offered the 1987 Caddy that he was still driving to him. We picked it up in august of 2007 and drove it the 400 miles home. It is now retired from daily use and enjoying the pampered life of a collector car.
