Wow what a bounty! Amazing that mace and nugmeg come from the same thing. Is that mace as in 'stop or I'll mace you'? I hope I get to try some of those french cashews - they sound yummy.
Grenada is a really beautiful island!! When I was a teenager, my family went on a Carribbean cruise! Grenada was one of the stops! We were there within a couple of years of that took place! I remember seeing the beauty of the Island & then you looke up and see there were a couple of burnt up military vehicles!
Could the fruit next to the star fruit be sapayo? It kind of looks like
it. I had a frined growing up who's grandmother made the best soup out
of sapayo. I would love to find a recipe for it, but then again I've
never been able to find sapayo in Missouri, not even at the latino
market. They do sell achote now so I guess there is always a chance
that they may carry sapayo in the future. We are getting a larger hispanic
population in our area now and the latino market has been expanding.
Very cool, I love the island I have never been to grenada, but barbados and Nassau were amazing. My husband and I honeymooned in Costa Rica so I imagine there are a lot of similarities.
I am so glad for this mini. I loved being on the Island of Grenada where much of the world's spices are grown. A short tour of the photo: In front are small fruit called French Cashews. They taste like pears, I ate several. Clockwise from 11 o'clock is a ginger root which is the root of a lovely flower, I don't know the next fruit, the next is a star fruit, then more French cashews, then a half pod of cocoa beans. The pods are about a foot long and inside are disgusting slimey white beans that must be dried, and then danced on (really) At 6 o'clock are small yellow pods bursting open, those are mace. You toss the fruit and take that red webbing to make mace. The nut that remains is nutmeg. To the left of them is a loofah sponge and peppers and cinnamon. I have no what the little yellow "brain" balls are. ???? If you notice that price of nutmeg went up a LOT four years ago and stayed there it is because Hurricane Ivan wiped out 95% of the trees that grow it. It takes 15 years to get a new crop.Grenada is the 2nd biggest grower of spices in the world
