"Visors were both functional and spiritual. Among the functions was protection from sun-glare and sea-spray. A ridge also ran mid-line inside the visor, which served to line up the spear for the kill. The whiskers and bead decoration clacked together with the rising of the wind, prompting a return home. If the visor was not removed during a storm it could cause the kayak to capsize. Spiritually, it gave the hunter power beyond him to brave the ocean and its dangers . The visor also masked the hunter from his prey, hiding his human identity. The carved talismans or charms were also for protection on the sea and a safe return to village and family."
