Here is how I altered my wooden tray:
1: paint green
2: paint edge yellow
3: decoupage patterned papers into bottom of tray using Mod Podge
4: glue buttons on with superglue
5: apply rub-on stitching, seal with Mod Podge
6: glue ribbon on with Mod Podge
7: decoupage flower on with Mod Podge
8: superglue buttons onto flower
to finish, coat entire project with Mod Podge at least twice, let dry between coats
