Journaling: I know that those who first had an ice box, who had to chip pieces off the big block of ice to put in glasses of lemonade and iced tea, thought refrigerators with metal ice cube trays were a dream come true. But, we had a refrigerator when I was born with metal ice cube trays and I’ve seen the metal trays replaced by plastic trays and then by refrigerators with automatic icemakers. The metal trays had a one-piece divider with a handle that you pulled to release the cubes of ice. If you filled them too full of water, it was impossible to release the cubes. You had to run water over the whole tray, and then it was doubtful if you could get it to release. If you touched the frozen metal tray with wet fingers, your fingers would stick to the tray. I didn’t like the metal trays and was glad to see them replaced by plastic.
