journaling reads: i was camping with my family at Muskegon State Park (a tradition we started the year before) and it was the day before we were to leave. i was riding my bike around the campground and as i was heading back to my parent’s camper, two boys asked to talk to me. my heart was pounding! these boys were talking to me! and i had actually had my eye on one of them all weekend. they asked how old i was. i replied that i was 14, and was quick to add, “but i’ll be 15 in two weeks!” the boy i had my eye on, decided i was too young for him (he was 16), but i was just the right age for his friend. so, he left me standing there with jason. and that was where it all began, in the middle of the channel campground in muskegon, michigan, on july 3rd, 1990. the beginning of pen pal letters, christmas and homecoming dances, dates, break-ups and getting back together, long distance phone bills, many miles added to our odometers, returns to the state park each 4th of july for camping, more dates, more letters, an engagement, some bridal showers (one was during camping at the state park), a wedding, a baby girl, 8 years of marriage, and many more years to come.
