14th pages from my Europe Vacation - the ruins of Pompeii. I didn't know until the trip started that we would get a chance to visit Pompeii. It was incredibly interesting, and I will never forget the city that was snuffed out by Mt. Vesuvius.

Journaling:
Day Eight
June 13th
The Splendour of the Seas docked in Naples (Napoli in Italian), Italy on Thursday. The six of us boarded the tour bus in Naples and rode along the coast to the ruins of Pompeii. In AD 79, the ancient volcano Vesuvius erupted and rained hot ash, stones, and cinders over the city of Pompeii, located a mile away. About 13 ft of ash covered the city, which remained buried for more than 1500 years.
Archaeologists began excavating Pompeii during the 18th century, finding the remains of people, ancient buildings, and other artifacts preserved amid the volcanic debris.
When archeologists found people, the poured plaster in the hollow where the person had been when caught in the eruption. Our tour guide showed us some of these forms as well as homes of wealthy people, Apollo’s temple, bakeries, “fast food” shops, the street set-up, and the large central Forum.
I enjoyed getting a glimpse of what life was like for the inhabitants of Pompeii, and how their town worked.
