My DS whom was born with a very uncommon birth defect. He has no clue why I worry and care about him so much.

You are my 8 year old miracle. It is very hard for me to imagine 8 years ago when you were so tiny and small. You were born with a birth defect called gastroschisis. You dad and I were in shock the day we found out (2/14/96). On June 18, 1996, I gave birth to you at 35 weeks. A strong little boy weighing 4 pounds 4 ounces changed my life forever. I came to UK NICU everyday from 12 noon to 10 p.m. The first 3 weeks were very hard for me. I couldn’t stay at home while you laid in an incubator. You grew daily and eventually fell in love with your head nurse Rhonda. She was the most caring nurse I believe I have ever met. You would look and smile at her with stars in your eyes. You were such a happy little baby to be in such a scary little place. At 2 months you had a bowel adhesions. Your bowel was growing together and they had to do surgery yet once more. After the surgery you grew at such a fast rate and were able to come home on September 16, 1996.
I look at you everyday and think the Lord above that you are healthy. You will probably never understand why I stay up all night if you get sick or why I panic if you are not hungry. When you have children you will understand why I fell so deeply in love with my little MIRACLE.

Hidden tag is the definition of gastrschisis:
GASTROSCHISIS is the herniation (protrusion) of abdominal
contents through the abdominal wall without involving the
umbilical cord. This defect can be detected by ultrasound before
birth and is located to the right of the intact umbilical cord. It is
not encased in a protective sac. If this defect has been there for
a long time prior to birth, the abdominal cavity will be small and
the protruding bowel will be thickened as a result of poor blood
return and irritation from the amniotic fluid. It is unusual for a
child born with gastroschisis to have other serious birth defects.
