We took Vince to the Exhibition (it's like the state fair) this year for the first time. There was a stand selling marvellous, handcrafted bronze animals, this magnificent elephant was standing out front. Vince was delighted to pose with it and I got some lovely shots.

There's a lot of techniques in this photo. I always color balance and sharpen my images now. Then I placed the overlay from the kit to distress the background photo. I used the pen tool draw a path around Vince and the elephant and then cut them out of the background by converting the path to a selection. To make the edges softer, I selected Vince and the elephant by ctrl-clicking, I then switched to quick mask and applied a gaussian blur of 4.5. I switched out of quick mask and then cut to a new layer. It just makes the edges of the cutout softer. Lastly, I applied a warming filter and unchecked the preserve luminosity option to smooth out some of the saturation the photo had from being taken in bright sunlight.

On the word art, I reduced the layer opacity to 50% and set the blending mode to mulitply.

Program: Photoshop CS
