What heart felt journaling Diane, a joy to read and I think you did exactly the right thing that little man was happy on his way in to nod after a hard day. Plenty of time to learn life can be rough at times. tfs Have I said to much Diane!!!!!
Journaling: Justin was so cute at his first piano recital. Fifty eight kids performed piano, recorders, woodwinds, and guitar. He was by far the youngest child. He followed a high school student. Talk about a hard act to follow. But he was a trooper. He walked up with no problem. I could hear the people around me say how cute he was. I of course raised my head with pride. He shyly pressed the keys to "Three Blind Mice." It was not his best performance of the song but he did just fine. Especially playing in front of so many people when your are only five years old. We were very proud of him. The kids sat up in front. Justin was very well behaved. Listening attentively to all the performances. We pulled him after an hour and a half so we could get him home to bed. We stopped for ice cream on the way home as his reward. Justin got moose track ice cream. I think he was wearing more of it then he ate.
That night when I tucked him in he said he loves piano. Then he asked why he did not get a trophy. Some of the older kids got trophies for a solo contest they performed in earlier in the year. I explained to him how they got it for a contest they played in. Of course that wasn't a good enough answer. So I got one of my old band trophies and gave it to him for his performance. He was so happy. He said it was the best trophy he ever won (it is now his third). I said we could put it downstairs next to all the other trophies. He asked if he could keep it next to his bed so he could see it when he wakes up in the morning.
I do not know if it was a good idea to give him the trophy or not. He needs to learn that you do not always get one. But he has worked so hard at practicing I did not want him to give up. In my opinion the trophies from the solo contest should have been given at that event and not at this totally unrelated event. At least that is how they did it when I was a kid.
