INSPIRATION: With the divorce rate rising to over 50% in the United States, the development of communication and other marital skills is at a premium. It seems as though our modern culture has elevated self-fulfillment about everything else. The divorce rate will only continue to rise if that type of attitude is not broken. In order to break the trend, newly married couples must learn a new set of skills, skills that may not have been on display during their formative years. Having experienced my own parents’ divorce, I know only too well what can happen when couples are not empowered with the right skills to make a marriage work.
After a foundational belief in God, the most basic and critical skill necessary to build a strong marriage is selflessness. Selflessness is the sacrifice of personal desires for the benefit of another. At its core, selflessness celebrates the value of others and satisfies God’s commandment to “love your neighbor as yourself.” Selflessness says, “I could do this to satisfy myself, but I choose to do that because I value you above myself.” Selflessness is the tactical means to loving others. If you want to know how to love someone, value them above yourself by doing things to prosper them.
I recently saw a movie that illustrated this message in such a profound way that I was motivated to capture its message in these pages. Pay It Forward reveals the impact that one individual can have on their surroundings by making a very small sacrifice to benefit three people in their environment. When those three make the same small investment, and the cycle continues, the collective impact can be enormous.
My husband and I have been fortunate to experience Pay It Forward in our lives, both in the investment that other couples have made in us and by the investment that we have made in the lives of others. It is in these behaviors that human beings show that they have the capacity for good. Our family ties…living parallel lives with each of these families and witnessing the true meaning of life, family bonding and family ties. And just like with most good things, it all starts in our own home.
My goal for the LO's was to make them western-rustic with a feel for our heritage as well as living for the future.
