You were about 6 when one day something was bothering you, and I’m sad to say I don’t remember what it was (I should have been more diligent in my journaling). However, I do remember telling you that when something upsets you, to find a ‘Happy Place’. You looked at me and asked, “What’s that?”
I explained to you that when you’re feeling bad, take some time to close your eyes or stare at a mark on the wall and ignore everything around you. I told you to imagine that you are where ever it is in the world that makes you happy inside. I said that it could be a color and imagine that you are floating in it, or if it’s a place, imagine you are there and smell the smells-taste the tastes, imagine feeling the things that would be there all around you.
The next day, we were driving home from day-care and you told me you had a ‘Happy Place’. “Where is it?” I asked. And this is what you said…”It’s at the beach! I imagine I am sitting at the edge, watching the waves and my hair is blowing to the side and I can smell the salt in the air and taste it on my lips. I feel the wind and sun on my skin and I imagine closing my eyes with my face tilted up to the sun and I can feel my hair blowing to the side. That’s what makes me happy.”
I looked at you and couldn’t believe my ears; I still remember how rewarding it was to hear about your grown-up happy place. I thought it would be Disneyland, or something relevant to a 6 year old little girl. It was also surprising because not only did I refrain from telling you my happy place, so you would find your own, but that the Beach is my happy place too… like Mother, like Daughter.
