Journaling: This scene was typical of our home on Sunday and holidays. The dining table was laden with so many bowls and platters that little room was left for the dinnerware. A usual meal included roast beef, a chicken dish, and frequently other meat dishes. Vegetables were usually field peas, creamed style corn, butter beans, yams and the English peas that Mother had put in the freezer from the Spring garden just for such occasions. Other side dishes included rice and gravy and fruit salad or gelatin salad. There were always several choices for dessert and everyone's favorite was Allie V.'s chocolate meringue pie! Meals were always served family style. I don't think Mother knew about buffet service! No one seemed to mind that the dishes, glasses, silverware, etc., were of several patterns and materials. While the table overflowed with food, Mother, and in this picture, Aunt Cecile were bringing in other dishes from the kitchen that there was not room for on the dining table. There was another table in the kitchen, almost as large as this one, that was also filled with food and diners! Clockwise from Mother (standing) is Uncle Nip, Daddy, me, Aunt Cecile (standing), an unidentified person, Uncle Frank, Bill Crawley, and Audie. The person sitting between Daddy and me is probably Sue Crawley. This picture was taken about 1964 or 1965. (based on design by Stacey Stamitoles in BGH Scrapbooks)
