What a cool bit of history, now days it would not even pay to sweep off the dust! that is lovely and I am glad no one is trailing their gowns in the mud.Not sure what we would call it here, no sidewalk, maybe walkway.

If I were to come upon this while traveling I assure you it would never occur to me that it was meant to WALK on... I don't know what I'd make of it - but sidewalk would not be my first guess.
" In 1474, Maud Heath (widow) did bequeath 8 pounds a year forever, to be laid out on the highways for the good of travellers along the highway"
This raised pavement, (or sidewalk some of you might say) was built to prevent the people walking to church to prevent them walking through the marsh and getting wet and muddy feet and the ladies trailing their dresses in the mire. Although there no longer marshland here, the pavement is maintained by the generosity of £8 ($16 ) per year. Probably doesn't go very far these days though!!
