Victorian window in my beautiful church. Tells the story of Elmer the monk, who in 700Ad decided that he could copy the birds he had been studying and that with the right equipment he could fly. He created wings from wood and parchment, stood on top of the tower and jumped. He flew some distance finally coming to rest in the river, his flight was further than that of the Wright brothers some centuries later. He was taken by cart back to the Abbey where he recovered from his broken legs and other injuries. The Abbot refused him permission to try again, this time using a tail. He lived until his 80s and is reported to have seen Haleys Comet twice in his lifetime. The average age was 40 in those days. A fascinating piece of history from Malmesbury Abbey.
