“California Boys”

Journaling:
When I moved to San Diego in 1995, I figured that I would move back to the Midwest to have children because it seemed like a safer place to raise them; not to mention, that's where my family lived. However, I fell completely in love with both George, a native Southern California boy, and San Diego, and couldn't, wouldn't leave. So here
we are, raising two sons in Southern California, land of beautiful beaches, a booming tourist industry, and skyrocketing home prices.
As I look at my handsome, suntanned boys, I think of how different their childhoods will be than my own. They completely take for granted being able to drive twenty minutes to go to the beach to boogie-board any day of the year. They think nothing of sunny, 70-degree weather in December. They think that all kids have annual passes to Sea World and Legoland, and that if they don't go to an amusement park at least once a month, the world will stop turning.
The things that I worried about ten years ago still worry me today—the easy access to drugs, the importance of status and physical appearance in this town, the high housing costs—but I have come to appreciate many other differences in California. For example, at ages 3 and 5, my boys have already been exposed to more cultures than I had been by age 21. They will go to school with children from all over the world, and will even start learning Spanish daily in kindergarten. What a stark contrast to my white bread Catholic
schooling in Michigan! Even better, here in San Diego, Sam gets to fulfill his dream of running around naked on a daily basis.
It definitely helps that Jonathan and Lindsey wised up and moved to San Diego, and that Jeannie, George, Elfie, and Katja all live here in town, so we have plenty of family surrounding us.
Sure, Max and Sam will only be able to go sledding or get into a snowball fight when we go to Michigan (or drive several hours to the mountains), but I think the advantages of living in San Diego outweigh those drawbacks. It will definitely be interesting to watch
my California boys' lives unfold.
