Along with their matching tray, these are a part of my biggest altered project yet, and only my second altered project overall. I made it for my submission in the Altered Items w/a Twist - Round 2 swap. My secret pal, Tigergenesis, is a true animal lover, loves bling, and likes the color combo of black, white, red. So....this is what I came up with.

Each coaster is two thick chipboard coasters glued together, not only to make them thicker but to make them stronger as well. The zebra print is pp decoupaged on with Hard Coat Mod Podge (two coats). The Hard Coat is waterproof making these coasters durable and waterproof. The blingy touch I needed was accomplished by hand-stitching 6mm ruby red faceted beads around two of the four edges. The same stitches were used on the opposite two sides to make the coaster look uniform. The thread used is a thick, twine-like material. Because these are coasters and therefore exposed to water, I made sure each one of the little holes created by the stitched was thoroughly coated/filled with Mod Podge (both sides of coaster). I didn't want to take any chances of condensation seeping into one of the wholes and ruining the whole coaster by swelling up the chipboard.

As a little side note, the opposite sides of the coasters have the zebra stripes going the opposite direction...just my little obsessive compulsive neurotic touch I guess...lol

Pics of the matching tray to these coasters are in my gallery, if you care to see. :)

TFL!
