SHCG: I love every little thing about this masterpiece. Love the mix off pp. It's like the papers reflect the different ages of the Sharon that is the wonderful person I know today. I'm debating the b&W seeming out of place. My reasoning is that the word paper symbolizes little girl paper to me and the b&W is grown up girl paper. You totally rocked both challenges
SHCG: This is just fantastic. I luv the deco cut strips across the page and the fabulous blues and purples (interesting how the old you is in red). The journaling/letter page ripped out of a notebook is just perfect. The black mat really makes it pop. The title is great and just the right amount of embellishments.
SHCG: OMG, Sharon. {{{hugs}}} to you and your younger self, too. You definitely met level three in my book! Star-check, stripes-check, pink (a shade of red)-check. Thank you for combining my challenge with QueenMel's! :-) I love the overall look of this and the journaling, as always dearie, is absolutely stunning! I love the sometimes serious, sometimes whimsical (lol'd about Haley's comet) approach that you took. Finally, I love the subtle little lock and key at the bottom. So symbollically perfect on this layout! This is so beautiful and I hope that the coffee didn't do too much damage.
SHCG: What a great response to the challenge Sharon! I love your journaling, it's very inspirational and something that you can always look back on and see how far you have come :) I like the layering of all the strips of papers and your pictures are so great ~ you went from an adorable kid to a beautiful woman. Great job :)
SHCG: As usual I love your journaling. The quote from Dr Suess was perfect here! Its kinda funny how he was strangely wise! The key & lock at the bottom are also a great addition, I get it.
Both of the photos of you are just precious! You are/were so adorable! I also love your method of striping here, the different pp's are a great way to use old scraps too. Great answer to the challenge!
SHCG: First off, both those photos are adorable. I love how your 8 years old self wrote a letter to your present self, thanks you for overcoming her shyness and coming a long way in general, and quotes Dr. Seuss. Cool kid! I like how you treated "You" in your title. The metal embellies and blue corner trims are great. Although I don't mind the stark contrast of the black mat, I don't believe Sharon-child would've used black to mat her letter to you. BTW, I had a feeling your response to the Stars & Stripes challenge would show your thinking outside of the box approach. I appreciate such a different take, and suitable to your scrafting needs.
SHCG: I love the journaling!!! Only thing I'd change is the matting for the journaling, the back ground papers are all bright, and the black just doesn't seem to fit in. I love how you put the deeper meaning of this challange for you in your discription. Over all beautiful job on it!!
SHCG: I think it' very cool how you used your patterned papers in the background of this LO. I like the contrast of the letter/matting from the background. I do agree with the comment below about the b&w pp seeming out of place. Also, would love to see the "today you are" title block matted in black as well.
shcg: beautiful journaling, what fun! beautiful page. love the pastel look of this page. wonderful for a little girl. the journaling and the pics stand out nicely from the back page. fun to look at and a great read.the only thing that seems off to me is the white strips look like winter with the black printing on the stark white, against the beautiful spring colors of the rest of the page.
This is my response to QueenMelissa/Eat Sleep Scrap's “‘The Kid' Speaks To Me” challenge for Scrap Happenzz Critique Group, to scrap a letter from your 8-year old self to your present-day self. This is also my response to Tiffany/whenscraphappenzz's “Stars & Stripes Forevahhhh” multi-level challenge.
Journaling – “Dear 37-years-old-Sharon, I am soo proud of you & excited to grow up to BE you! I cannot believe you got me/us to be not as quiet & shy as I am. I love that you figured out how to get me to stop hiding. I wish you'd PLAY more…I know you will in your scrapbooking & w/ CUTE GREG (MUCH better than the Beatles & the Hardy Boys!), but have more fun everyday. You're happy, but you could be happier! By the way, AWESOME that you did all the things you did in life, conquered so much…I'm AMAZED that I grew up to be so strong, I didn't know I had it in me! It's OK that you didn't do the things you/we thought we were gonna do, ‘cause you're WAY happier than we ever thought possible - COOL! I love the amazing people in your life – family & friends, love how creative you/we still are… You became independent, professional, responsible, healthy, inspirational. I think you can now be easier on us/you, you've achieved so much, please be nicer to me/us! Give yourself credit for who you are right NOW. I always remember how unique I am, but life's curveballs make you forget sometimes how unique you are – WHY? Dr. Seuss said ‘Today you are you. That is truer than true. There is no one alive who is you-er than you.' PROMISE ME you'll remember that…& I'll forgive ya for missing seeing Haley's Comet in 1986! Love (& see you later!), 8-years-old-Sharon”
I thought this would be a cool challenge to respond to for a few reasons. My present-day self wrote a letter to my younger self in this LO from last year, Serious Little Me: http://scrapbook.com/galleries/41507/view/1056489/-1/80/1.html I find it interesting that in both letters I tell myself to take it easier on myself…hmmm… The title is from a Dr. Seuss quote which I put in the letter… coincidentally I was just reading Tasra Dawson's “Real Women Scrap” & she had this quote; it really hit home w/ me, & when this challenge came up, it was very fitting. Finally, writing a letter to ourselves from our younger self was a recent exercise in the book “The Artist's Way” which I am kinda, slowly, working through, kinda… So the concept of capturing wisdom from your childhood self was on my brain already when this challenge came along...
For the “Stars & Stripes Forevahhhh” challenge, I reached level 1 for the stars in the title “o” & flower center. I think I reach level 2 for the lined paper (stripes, you know) but I'll leave that up to Tiff to decide! Finally – this is prolly pushing it – pink is technically a hue of red, so did I reach level 3 for my shade of red, white & blue color scheme?!
The scan doesn't capture the bling-ness of the title star, silver heart, silver lock & key charms & the slight shine of the purple star sequin, oh well... As someone who's currently childfree, it was fun to finally cut into some of that “little girl” pink pp, though I had to make sure that silver heart didn't cover up the “S” in “Sassy,” LOL (that happened early in the process). Also fun to use diff fonts for the title. The big white flower & blue corner trim were '07 birthday gifties from Kaleidascope (thanks K).
Thanks to QueenMel & Tiff for super challenges! TFL :)
ETA: After uploading this, I spilled coffee on this! Resulting in damage to the side of my present-day-me photo, it looks like white ink smudges. It could've been worse but dang! Outta respect for the wishes of my 8 yr old self, I am taking the mishap in stride & not obsessing over it!
