SHCG: This is gorgeous! I have one critique, and it is a big one. I hate that we didn;t know each other then, I could have met you. Hello, that's like right there to me...you have to come back. that's all there is to it.
SHCG: Great response to the challenge Sharon! Your paper ruffle came out great! Love all the photos that you included and the little captions that you added to certain pics! great job :)
SHCG: This is just fabulous I LUV everything about it. All of the photos with the printed caption are just great. The captions are just the right size, color and placement. And it's cool how the captions and journaling are not absolutely perfect...adds a human touch and makes them more personal. The overall colors/theme/paper on both pages echoes the subject matter (photos) really well. Now let's talk about the title...it is just GREAT from the choice of papers, fiber, letters. I really like your choice in font and how you overlapped the "i". The ruffle reminds me of that dimpled sheet metal building material (I can't remember what it is called) and the pattern paper and inking has a real nostalgic feel. Great page. See deco scissors used with restraint can add to a layout.
That looks like a fun trip. I like how and where you used the pleats, just the right spot. The arrangement of the photos shows them off but doesn't overpower the viewer with sheer numbers :) Nice job. Love the colors, too.
SHCG: LOVE that background pP! Your awesome schrubby obtained some beautiful photos. As usual, your journalling is superb, I think you ought to think about writing a book as your journaling is so descriptive I can almost imagine myself there with you!
SHCG: Love how you got so many pics on this LO. Great colors. Great to see the deco scissors got a workout!! The mountain on the bg adds to it wonderfully. Love the title font also. There is one thing annoying me, and I think I know why, but that is the journaling spot -- I guess it just seems to far over to the left for me, not even bordered. Beautiful LO overall, and that ruffle, is awesome :)
SHCG: So much fabulousness here, Sharon! I'll start at the back and work my way forward. I love the soft, subtle background paper that you chose. Your paper pierced mountain is subtle and really looks like part of the paper. If you hadn't told me, I would have thought that you bought a landscape paper for this purpose. Your flourishes are beautiful and they wonderfully mimic the wind that was so debillitating. The pictures are perfectly adorable and your ability to journal so magnificently helps convey the feeling for the day. I also adore the little journal strips on the pictures! Your paper ruffle is perfect and adds a lot of dimension to the title box. Loves it! This is just total radness! Superb job!
SHCG: I love the non-feminine paper ruffling, further enhanced by the deco scissors and personalized with the fibers (good idea!). I'm digging your photo placement, the labels of each photo, and how your journaling appears in the center of this two-pager. I gotta get my hands on that checkerboard pp, and my Cricut is jealous of that Quickutz font. I like what the cloud bg pp adds to the lo, and how it's brought to life by your fabulous paper piecing. In fact, I think you should show off more off it by switching places between the title block and the long-horned sheep photo. This will cover up your flourishes, but you can add more. That embossing can get tricky, can't it? Up close, it seems you might need to try a coupla things to get a more even embossed look. First, make sure you have ample powder that's equally distributed. Tap off the excess the best you can, and using a small, thin, dry paintbrush works for me to the get the rest of the strays and smooth out for more defined lines. Then, make sure you heat long enough and give equal time to all parts. Of course, you probably know all this, so I'll shut up now. Looking forward to the rest of the pages in this album, and great response to the challenge.
This is my response to Lisa/Gelidy Gelato's Scrap Happenzz Critique Group “Paper Ruffle” Challenge. Please pardon the imperfect scans/stitching. I combined the left & right sides so this would be one image but they don't line up perfectly here, looks better IRL. Also some of the edges get cut off (ETA: particularly the left side of the rt pg, the journaling does have a left matte).
I'm doing 3 different two page LOs about our '05 trip to Colorado…I've finished 2 LOs so far & they both have included paper pieced mountain scenes! Not intentional but I just can't help doing them for this trip. I ended up covering up these mountains w/ photos but they're back there…!
Thanks for such a cool challenge, Lisa – doing the ruffle was fun & new for me! And of course, I love any reason to bring out my deckle deco scissors (I used those on my mountains too). I also liked trying to figure out how to adapt the technique for this trip as I was the only female (went w/ DH, FIL, & 3 BILs) so the photos for this trip are all a bit more masculine...but I was determined to do a ruffle!
Journaling: “Sat. Nov. 26, 2005 – After delicious sleep, we chowed down breakfast @ Mountain View (yummy omelet, awesome coffee), ran into Jeff & just talked for a couple hours. Later, we all went to Manitou Springs to catch the Cog Railway Train to the summit of Pike's Peak. Manitou Springs was a cute town w/ neat stores. The Cog Railway was tres cool, we were nestled in the same row facing each other, Greg & I bought box lunches (sandwich, snacks & postcard for only $8!) as the ride would be over 3 hrs. Our conductor Walt was entertaining & informative, sharing cool facts as we ascended. Soo neat to watch the scenery change during the climb…the views of other hills, valleys, spectacular red rocks, old pine trees…we then ascended above the tree line & it was just rocks. Michael's acrophobia was fine though he sometimes wouldn't look out the window. Finally, The Summit. It was dizzying – literally, the high altitude causing light-headedness - & freezing (60° at the base, 14° at the summit w/ -31° wind chills!). After resting & shopping @ the Summit House, we set out to walk around outside. I lasted 5 minutes! Patches of ice on the ground & tremendous winds made simply walking in my sneakers so unsteady. I savored the views that inspired Katharine Bates' “America The Beautiful” but slowly maneuvered back inside & then to the train. Greg luckily took some pics & Viddy. I told Charlie in the train that Greg had better traction than me w/ his Timberlands on & just as I said that, Greg happened to slip outside! Cute stumbler! The train ride down was just as cool…napped & snacked a bit, & just continued to have a great time together. A wonderful journey!”
I tried to balance out the light embossing swirl stamps on the left by stamping a swirl in the lower right corner but that spot was over a photo so the stamp/embossing didn't turn out as nice looking, c'est la vie. That lower right pic is also a pocket; there's a tag w/ hidden journaling that talks about the rest of the trip inside, it pulls out w/ the same ribbon as I used behind the title.
The swirl stamps (2 diff sets) were birthday gifties from Brenda & Amanda - thanks, galzz!
