There was a young man in my town that wanted to wear his kilt to his prom, the school said no, he sued and won, of course it didn't get through the courts until after the prom was over, but a precadent was set, kilts are appropriate formal wear.
My two ds love their Scots ancestory too. They are also interested in their Irishness too. We have several tartans that we are associated with. Youngest ds is going to be in a wedding in Nov. all of the males of the wedding party will be wearing their kilts. Erjaan, did you know there is a online scrapbook store that specializes in tartan paper, etc? I have bought some from them. They have lots to chose from.
My DGS wear a kilt. Really. Sporan and cross pin and all. The plaid is from the clan of my great great grandfather which make this boy about 1/32 Scottish but when they studied the different nationalities of his ancestry he fell in love with Scotland. I asked him what he carries in his sporan and he said "air".
