We have those around here, but I had no idea what they were called. I've always just called them garden spiders.

Agriope Spider in web

here is another spider in a web.I think this one is called and Agriope. This spider makes makes a nice hammock for itself while the thin strands stretch out . That zigzag stripe is a common sight.
