When A House Becomes Your Home

When exactly does a house actually become a home? Is it when you first step foot inside after signing the mortgage? Or when all the moving boxes have been emptied and everything is finally in it’s place? Maybe it’s when you get that first piece of mail delivered to the mailbox that finally has your name on it? For us, we found a house that was home at first sight. We had been searching for a place to move for about 3 weeks before we found our home. When I say “searching” I mean 2-3 newspapers a day, scouring real estate sections for anything that might look good, calling landlords about possible options, driving all over town looking inside and out of any house that we might actually be interested in... in other words, going crazy on a daily basis for one house heart break after another. None of them ever seemed to be THE one for us. One Sunday during our newspaper hunt I spied a possibility that hadn’t been in print before. Though the rent was a little higher than we had been looking at, the address was in a good area and actually very close to my job. Off we went, our eyes peering intently at each road sign for the one particular street....Manitou. Finding it we turned, came around a corner and there it was.... our home! At first we didn’t believe we had the right address because the house was too perfect! It was brand new, sat on a corner lot, was beige in color (Andrea loves the brown colors), had a big tree in the front yard...it was amazing! We wanted to see the inside but the doors were locked. We tried looking thru the windows but every one had blinders. Regardless, we knew we wanted this house so we called the number in the ad and went to get an application. When we got the application the landlord asked if we had gone inside: of course we said no, it was locked. He then told us the key was in the electrical box by the front door! I didn’t think the Camry could go as fast as it did as we rushed back to the house. The key was where he said and with trembling hands we turned the lock, opened the door... and we were home! Every piece of the house was exactly as we had wanted a home to be. I even told Andrea it was like the house had been built for us! By looking at these pictures you can see some of the things we have filled our home with so far, but from that first step inside to tomorrow when I walk back in after work, this house has been the home we were searching for, the home we are starting our life story together in.
