I was overcome with so much emotion as I watched the election results on November 4, 2008. I have witnessed and applauded the magnificent accomplishments of many African Americans during my lifetime, including Thurgood Marshall, Martin Luther King, Jr., Ernie Davis, Colin Powell, Guion Bluford, Mae Jemison, Tony Dungee and Lovie Smith, Halle Berry and Denzel Washington and so many others. But this was different. Here was this wonderfully articulate man with such a calm demeanor and undying love and devotion to his family, running for the highest position in the land. This was the day our ancestors and all of us had waited and hoped for, and many died for. When Barack Obama was declared he 44th President of the United States at 10:01 p.m. Eastern time, My heart pounded and my mouth fell open and I just said “WOW”, “Unbelievable”, and “Thank You Jesus” as I sat in front of the television working on a scrapbook page of family and Aaron sat next to me watching. It made me feel like crying tears of joy and shouts of praise for this victory. Text messages started coming in from everywhere from family and friends about the excitement. My niece Quana called and was elated. She had just called her 81 year old grandfather to wake him up to tell him the news. We did not go to bed until after the Obamas came out and greeted the massive crowd and the speech was given. Only then were we finally able to exhale and begin processing the enormity of what had just happened. We never thought we would live to see the day when America would elect an African American for President. Now, when we tell our children and grandchildren they can be anything they want to be, including the President of the United States, we can point to Barack Obama as an example. I’d say this is one scrapbook worth making. What a proud moment in history.
