Living in a house with all boys isn’t what you would call peaceful. Or clean, or tidy, and certainly not boring. At any given time there are toys and books strewn room to room, dirty shoes with socks stuffed in them piled by the door, backpacks and cast off belongings hung on chairs or flung under the table. An entire battle scene staged on the kitchen table that is not to be disturbed because it has taken “all day!” to complete. I can’t get into bed at night without finding a truck or juice cup or half eaten granola bar already there. And this is just the mess of the little boys. Then there’s the “big” boy’s mess. Sawdust tracked in the house, grime in the sink from washing hands or cleaning out a spray gun. Sitting on a tape measure every time I get into the truck. And then there’s the noise. Oh my God I never knew such little people could make such an awful din. Add to that the instigating of the “big” boy and it’s an all-out ruckus. I don’t understand the constant burping, the urgent need to wrestle all the time or the fascination with video games. Even the cats are male. I am the Queen Bee in the house and that is a good thing, but sometimes I wish for a little more estrogen to tone down all the testesterone! 9.11.2005

I love lipstick. It’s one of my favorite things about being a girl. I have so many tubes that there is no way I will ever be able to use them in this lifetime. But I can’t help myself, I buy more. I have even bought the same color twice by accident. I never leave the house without lipstick on or I feel totally naked. I have to have something on my lips, even if it’s just chapstick, but I prefer lipgloss. And the funny thing to me is how much Norm and the boys HATE it. If I give them a kiss with anything on my lips, they make a face and quickly wipe it off. Must be a girl thing!

Another favorite is nail polish. There’s just something about a new bottle that I love so much. The colors always draw me in whenever I’m at the store. I tend to go in phases with the colors I select. Right now I’m in a “red” phase and wear that most of the time. I have so many that whenever it’s time to pant my toes (every 2 weeks) I sometimes have a hard time deciding which one to use! Painting my toes is a little bit of pampering I do for myself but I’m not as able as I once was to reach all the way down there to paint them myself. I think a bi-weekly pedi may be just what the doctor ordered!

Jackson loves trucks. I mean LOVES them. He has to have one to sleep with every night. No stuffed creatures for him! His current favorite is the orange monster truck. He was partial to his Bobcat but it broke (by his own doing) so he’s moved on. When he’s not getting into things that are off-limits, he’s busy filling his yellow Tonka dump truck with all his other little trucks. He then pushes it around at top speed slowing down only to take a corner. It is his own transportation device. Lately he adds to his cargo whatever seems to catch his fancy. Today Buzz Lightyear is the favorite.

Of course I can’t forget the biggest boy of them all, Norm. I snapped these photos of his shop, which is usually off limits to me. If I need something, he will go get it or accompany me to look for it, my presence is not very welcome because this is his “man cave.” I cant’ stand the be out there anyway. It reeks of clear coat and paint thinner and it’s usually pretty noisy when he’s working. Not to mention all of the sawdust that coasts every available surface which always makes my asthma flare up. It’s every man’s dream, but what a MESS!

This is the scene that resides on my kitchen table except when I tell Connor to clear it off. Connor will sit for hours acting out battles complete with sound effects that must include flying spit to sound authentic. (blech) I laugh at the combination of characters in his little army. Anakin Skywalker, Cowboys, Indians and Green Army Men. I wonder whoa re the bad guys and who are the good guys? Connor doesn’t know and most importantly doesn’t care. As long as they are blowing each other up, shooting guns and wrestling, does it really matter? Boys.
