My husband and I encountered this big ol' porcupine along the creek. He was a really a big guy. They move pretty slow for the most part, but when running away from something can really move! While interesting to see or watch, they are not our favorite wild animal. In a place where trees have to work hard to survive and are few in number, these critters kill them. They eat the bark of the tree exposing it to insects, disease and decay. They also pose a hazard to dogs, cattle, and horses. It isn't a fun thing to have to pull quills from the nose of a curious dog, calf or colt. This past fall I even pulled several quills out of the shoulder of one of my horses. Have no idea how they ended up there!
