what a beautiful barn - I have a book called the "Enchanted Barn" by Grace Livingstone Hill - this barn and your little story makes me think of that book.
Lovely shot, and love hearing the history. I can't imagine living with the animals below, but I understand for some cultures this was the norm. Not my cup of tea!
It is a beautiful structure, I think barns are so interesting, and they are so different in different parts of the country. Around here, people are more and more letting the old wooden barns just go or tearing them down, metal pole barns are so much easier to and cheaper to build and maintain. The white house down the road from me had a big old barn, they tore down a few years ago, when they got to base of it they couldn't knock it down...they had to burn it, it was so sad to me watching the hand hewn timbers burn. I think it is great you are keeping yours!
This is the barn that is seen in the background of many of my photos. . Built of stone on the lowerl level into the side of a hill which forms the back of that level, it has a lot of history attached to it. The original family from this ranch lived in the haymow (upper level) for their first winter on the ranch. They hadn't gotten the house built yet. I always thinkof what it must have been like to have your milk cows, some chickens and probably a horse or two living down below! We use this barn and are starting to do some renovations and restoration so it will last another hundred years or so.
