I'm a big fan of the "Journaler's Sidekick" and one of the questions asked was "what is most significant world event that has happened in your lifetime?" As I started filling out the area the thoughts of that day came rushing back to me, where I was and what I was doing, then I had to look at the images that I had saved in my computer from the news and the layout just came to my head and had to be done, it took me from 12:30am till 6:00am because I had to finish it I couldn't walk away. On the American Flag are the lyrics to GOD BLESS THE USA by Lee Greewood as that was the song I heard on the radio driving on the expressway past the quiet of Downtown Chicago that day.

JOURNALING: (on transparency over collage)
The most significant world event that has happened thus far during my life time has been the attacks of September 11, 2001. This event was a surprise but yet so forth coming that as much as no one would have thought it to actually happen it still did.
The morning of the attacks I was awoken by a phone call from my boyfriend of that time Scott telling me to turn on the TV and as I did so I saw the damage from a plane crashing into one of the World Trade Center buildings and as I sat in awe watching this horrific sight I along with millions of other viewers and spectators saw a second plane crash into the other tower. I remember calling my Dad as he sat on the picket line at Overnite and talking to him about it as he also watched in disbelief and horror.
Even with all the chaos going on I still managed to get ready for work however I left late. Driving to work was scary, there was no music on the radio just the same reports being aired over and over again. The reports of all the planes being grounded to the airport nearest to them and the reports of the planes that were missing and no contact could be made. As I made my way to work another plane crashed into the Pentagon. At this time there was still one other plane in the skies that couldn't be accounted for. As the reports of this hit the airways I was approaching to go through the city via the 90-94 expressway, in doing so with thoughts going through my head was that last plane headed for Chicago and going to hit the Sears tower or the Hancock building? As I passed the express lanes they began to reverse so traffic could get out of the city, yet there I was on the expressway going to work as Downtown Chicago was evactuated.
When I arrived at work, Cingular Wireless in Lincolnwood Towncenter Mall, it was very quiet, very few stores were open and the mall was very quiet. A small kiosk outside the mall had the TV on and most people in the mall surrounded it watching in disbelief. About an hour after I arrived at work the worst happened, the World Trade Center buildings collapsed one at a time with thousands of people inside, reports and photos even showed that people jumped to their death instead of letting the building fall around them, at that time I even wondered, would I do the same?
I sat at work with my co-workers Suzie and Sonia and talked about the events when a customer from New York walked in in a panic, almost in tears but more worried. His daughter worked in the World Trade Center and he couldn't get ahold of her, the lines were jammed and calls would just plain out not go through and in his efforts in trying his battery had died. Knowing that we could not do too much to help him we gave him a charger and we all proceeded to call her number until one of us got the phone to ring and he was able to talk to her and find out she was okay and was walking accross the Manhattan Bridge to safety. Even though there was a feeling of satisfaction knowing that we helped this one individual get in touch with his loved one it was a saddening feeling knowing that so many others had still died.
Around 1:00 in the afternoon corporate finally called stating that since the mall had such down due to this horrific event that we could lock up and leave. However in leaving a problem arose for me, they shut down the express way and I had no way of getting home. Suzie invited me to her house where we sat until 6:00 watching the news and seeing the same footage over and over again. It was there we learned that the plane that was missing was hijacked and was headed for the White House however was taken over by the passengers and crashed in a Pennsylvania corn field.
When I left Suzies house and got on the expressway all sorts of thought were racing through my head. What if that had happened here? What if I someone I knew had died? I just couldn't stop thinking about it. The whole day was so surreal I just wanted to go home and hug Scott and see my parents.
As I approached the Grand Avenue Bridge underpass on 90-94 I looked up to see a giant American Flag hanging on the bridge and just as I was about to go under the bridge "God Bless the USA" by Lee Greenwood came on the radio and all I could do was cry.
