My mom, sister and Gram visited me in my new home this Christmas. During a walk up 12th Street, my Gram paused to pick up a large fallen leaf. She admired the specimen for several moments before placing it between two pages of her Smithsonian guide. This simple act was like an epiphany to me. I instantly recognized her as the person who has fostered in me a childlike delight in the everyday wonders of the natural world, and always encouraged me to let my imagination soar.
