The first two modern dances I'd done were fairly literal. See, my modern instructor (who also teaches my ballet, jazz, and private lessons) has this thing about dances telling a story. Sometimes he tells us the story and sometimes we're allowed to make the stories up on our own. The two modern dances prior to this one were danced to songs with words. We were just interpreting the words of the song and using that to tell a story (still not sure how jungle dress and Bon Jovi's "Blaze of Glory" go together to tell a story). Last year, we did an instrumental piece--- called "Kismet" by a group called Bond ---so we didn't have words to tell the story. We had to make up our own stories since he didn't give us one to go by either.

I wound up making up some sort of story about exotic lands and dancers and royal courts and things like that. The plots always changed each week but the exotic thing kinda stayed the same...not really sure why. I guess it had something to do with the way the music sounded or the movements in the dance. Modern is weird that way...it's more about movement than anything else. I'm still working on figuring out that part of modern since I don't always understand what that means.
