At the city square you’ll see the Town Hall, one of the few remaining examples of gothic architecture in Holland. Every hour you can listen to the city hall’s chimes and watch the puppetshow depicting the moment that city rights were given to Gouda back in 1272 by Floris V.
Once a year we see Gouda by candlelight. The market is romantically lit by thousand of Gouda candles, with carol singing around the huge Christmas tree in front of the Town Hall. We went there 10 years ago when we came to Gouda. This year Steven went for the first time on December 13th (Tuesday). He loved it. It’s always extremely busy and people come by buses from whole over the country to watch it. This year is the 50th time and our Queen was there also.
The facades of the old houses in Gouda are lovely. Particularly those which have an inlaid stone to explain the purpose of the house. The biggest of these stones is on “De Waag”. We really love the Subway in the old houses. Something old, something new….
