Hidden Journaling Reads: On Saturday May 16th, 2009 Aslan and I went to Duke Gardens. It was comical at first because we could not find a parking spot and then when we went to pay for the parking the machine would not work so we had to go inside to get a parking pass, but they really do not want dogs inside! Oh well, I was not leaving my dog outside alone. When we got inside to the visitors center to get the pass the man asked if I had any money. I said, "no," just to see if I could get the pass for free since the machine is broken. There have been other times when the machine is broken and I have gotten free parking. But then he said, "No money, no pass." So I pretended to ruffle through my purse and came up with two dollars. The man had started to walk away so I waved the two dollars at him and he came back and gave me a parking pass. So then Azzie and I had to go put the parking pass back in the car, but he saw another dog who was starting to walk down one of the trails and Aslan wanted to follow. After I put the parking pass in my window, Aslan and I set out for out adventure! That day we decided to explore some new trails that we had not seen before. We went to the Japanese garden section, which we had seen before, but we took a different route. It was a little disappointing that there were not many flowers in bloom as we walked along the paths. But as we were walking we got to see a wedding party who was having their photographs taken in the gardens. The bride was wearing a stunning purple dress. I have never seen a bride in a purple dress before. The photographer was having her sit on the walls and look at the flowers (this was before we got to the Japanese section of the gardens so there were some flowers in bloom). Then the photographer had her smell the roses while he took her picture. There were roses and azaleas around the main circle where the photo shoot was happening. So back to walking along the paths, Aslan wanted to stop and smell everything. He also wanted to pee on everything! He would lift his leg like he was peeing on something, but nothing would come out. So I told him, “Sorry, bud, but the tank is empty!” It did not stop him from trying though. As we walked down the paths enjoying the beautiful eighty degree weather I saw a grassy area where the grass was a brilliant shade of green. I decided that spot would be a good place for a photo shoot of me and Aslan. So I told Aslan “Down.” And he went into the down position (just lying down on his belly). Then I went to get next to him to lie down in the grass too so we would be on the same level. As soon as I got down beside him, he popped up into a sit! No matter what I told him to do he would only sit. That is why in this picture I am lower than he is, because I am lying on the ground and he is sitting. Nevertheless, I got a few good picture before he got tired of the photo shoot and started to wander off (He could not go far as he was on his leash, but he started sniffing around and not paying attention to me). So then I decided to do a photo shoot of myself since it was such a bright sunny day out and the grass was so green it made a perfect backdrop. I also got a few good pictures of myself too. As for the photo shoots, I had Aslan do his usual on a bench. I try to find a different bench each time for some variety. This time there were no beautiful blooming flowers as the backdrop for the photos, just trees. But when I told him to sit, he was so pooped he just lay down! I had never gotten any pictures of him lying on a bench, so it was perfect. I got some cute pictures to scrap, so I was happy! Next, we continued on out walk (what we had come there for!). We eventually got to the pond in the Japanese section of the garden where there are geese and ducks. We saw 3 male Mallards swimming and countless Canadian geese. Then as we walked along the stone steps we came across a male and female Mallard pair that was not in the water. I got their picture as they stood up to get away from us (probably to get away from Azzie because he looked like he wanted to go lick them all over!). We then got on some back paths that eventually led us back to the parking lot, and just in time because both of us were pooped. Right before we got to the parking lot there was a couple standing next to a tree, to avoid walking into them I went under the tree branches. Then I had the crap scared out of me! There was a large turkey sitting under the tree! It was HUGE! And I was totally not expecting it. It scared me. Those things are UGLY! After we got away from the big turkey, Aslan and I walked to the car. Then we both had a drink of refreshing water and cooled down in the air conditioning. It was really hot and sunny outside. I got rosier cheeks because of it, but luckily did not get a sun burn. (I had forgotten sunscreen.) On our way home we stopped at Dunkin Donuts for the first time since we moved here. Turns out they have a drive through which was perfect because I had Azzie with me. I got an ice cream with Resees Peanut Butter Cups in it and I got Azzie two Munchkins. Then we went home and enjoyed our snack. We had a great day at Duke Gardens!!!
